How to use the ancient art of smudging to remove negative energy

Exploring Femininity

Let me ask you this – how positive do you feel on a day to day basis?
Or perhaps, I should ask – how negative do you feel on a day to day basis?

I would like to share with you an ancient method of cleansing away the positive ions in your environment that makes you feel physically tired and emotionally depleted.

A big part of my work with women is to bring back sacredness in to their busy lifestyle by indulging in simple rituals.

Today I want to share with you one ancient ritual that you can use when you or people around you are ill, depressed, fearful, angry, emotionally unbalanced, tired or stressed.

You can also use it when you move in to a new living space or start a new job or business;
before & after your meditation or yoga;
after an argument;
or upon returning home from crowded places to calm you down.

This ritual is called Smudging which is also known as spiritual house cleaning.
It involves passing yourself or your living environment through sacred smoke as a means of purification.

Watch the video below to find out how you can start using the ancient art of smudging to remove negative energy from your aura and your living environment too.

The ancient ritual of smudging is one of the oldest and purest methods, practiced by the North & South American and Siberian shamans, the Greek and the Romans, the Celtics, the Middle Eastern, Indian to the Far East cultures; in order to open the doors of the soul to the spirit world.

I love to smudge myself and my living environment every single day and this helps me to feel grounded and in tune with my wisdom and divinity.

Although you can find various natural elements that you can use for smudging, my favourite one is – Sage.

The word ‘Sage’ comes from a Latin word called Salvare which means ‘to heal’.
Sage when burned releases high vibrational energy smoke and has long been used in ceremonies to promote purification, protection, longevity and immortality.

Burning sage literally changes the ionization polarity of the air that makes you feel physically tired and emotionally depleted.

Recent studies have also shown that sage can also cure respiratory diseases by purifying the air and is also advocated to addicted smokers to heal their lungs.

Here are my 5 simple steps to start smudging –

  • Become fully present and tune in to your intention. Remember that it is the intention behind this practice that grants the process its power.
  • Burn the sage.
  • Using a feather or simply your hands direct the smoke over your body from feet up to your head and then back down again. As you do this imagine the smoke taking away all the negative emotions and charge from your life.
  • Once you have smudged yourself, begin to move through your living space. Wave the smoke into all corners, across the doorways and also into the shadow places. Make sure you open your windows for the free flow of air.
  • Once done, allow the sage to either burn out or gently press it out on a heat-proof surface.

Some traditions suggest to burn an incense following smudging as sage has a yang energy and yin of an incense can bring a balance to your senses.

You can find plenty of variety of sage too. So I would suggest starting with white sage which is one of the most commonly used.
Oh yes, also make sure that you buy them from a reliable source.

Now I would love to hear from you.

Do you like this idea of smudging? If so, give me a like on the YT video.
And if you already smudge share with me what is your favourite herb to smudge.

    Getting sage for smudging is a challenge in New Delhi and my supplier doesn’t stock it because it’s expensive and the concept hasn’t caught on – yet.

    I stick to the Hindu version of burning camphor in a receptacle and following the same procedure as you described in the post for smudging if I want a powerful cleaning and on occasion using dhoop made of different herbs for specific cleaning. I like my living environment to be happy and balanced.

    I’m a big sage smudger, Jonita! I keep sage around all the time, and as you say–whenever I’m feeling negative energy, I do a smudge ritual.
    This I know for true: “Rituals draw us to a sacred zone of awareness, receptivity and flow.” Absolutely!
    Love this post!
